NAME: Alexander Valeryevich Khalifman
BIRTHDATE: January 18, 1966
BIRTHPLACE: Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia
CREDENTIALS: Became a grandmaster in 1990. Won the 1999 World Championship competition in Las Vegas, Nevada.
MODUS OPERANDI:
Preference for playing the Sicilian against e4. Repertoire as White, and as Black against d4, is varied and balanced across several lines.
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Originally was taught chess at age six by his father. Won the New York Open against many higher rated players in 1990. Continues to have much success as a player (particularly through his involvement in the German national league) and as an instructor. He is an active chess analyst and now teaches chess at The Grandmaster Chess School in his hometown of St. Petersburg.
